People wonder why this 53 second running scene was included in The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. At first, it just seems like a pointless event of Makoto merely running and “moaning” as people have satirized. But if you look deeper into the meaning, you can see that it’s exactly the message that the whole movie tries to convey: Time waits for no one. The speed of the camera remains the same throughout all 53 seconds, while Makoto struggles to “keep up” and eventually rushes ahead of it. The latter can be perceived differently, such as Makoto overpowering (taking control of) time to save Chiaki or the notion to move along with time no matter what it takes. However, the main message is clear:
"Time waits for no one."
